Volvo Debuts an Impressive Interior Concept at 2016 Beijing Auto Show

When you think of your car, is it a place you go to relax, or is it just where you sit when you’re traveling from one place to another? Well, if the former, Volvo wants to change the way you think about a luxury car interior. That’s where the Volvo S90 Excellence Concept comes in. Debuted at the 2016 Beijing Auto Show, the sculptural concept demonstrates Volvo’s commitment to both improving progressive luxury and changing how people relate to their vehicles. This concept definitely does both. Take a look in the video below!

This interior concept focuses on driver/rider experience in the fullest sense. With elegance, convenience, and luxurious comfort engineered at every purposeful detail and interesting flourish. The first thing you’ll notice is the front passenger seat is completely gone, making way for a large tablet and stow-away compartment for your shoes. In the back arm rest you’ll find a mini refrigerator with two hand-cut crystal glasses from Swedish glassmaker Orrefors.

The design encourages new ways to use and relate to one’s vehicle. It features three modes:

  1. Mobile Working Mode: this mode features a fold-out work table and large screen for emails, video conferencing, or just getting some work done in the car.
  2. Pure Entertainment Mode: using the large touchscreen, you can catch up on your latest Netflix shoes or listen to music as you enjoy your ride home.
  3. Pure Relaxation Mode: in this mode you can recline your seat, grab a cold drink from the mini-fridge and relax with your feet propped on the heated foot support.

With so many modes designed into this concept, it has the potential to fundamentally alter how one uses their vehicle, and the way we even think about or talk about our cars.

“One of the key elements is the removal of the front passenger seat. We removed this to provide unrestricted forward visibility and the sense of space and light that this brings. It has an immediate and extremely calming effect.” – Robin Page, Vice President Interior Design at Volvo Cars

“We do things differently at Volvo Cars – we always have. Our distinctive approach to interior design aims to deliver a luxurious and calming experience. The art of Scandinavian Design is all about enhancing the life experience, and this is what Volvo Cars does best.” – Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President Design at Volvo Car Group

The Volvo S90 is set to launch to American showrooms late in 2016 and will be replacing the Volvo S80 in the model tree. While there’s no telling when we’ll see an interior like the concept demonstrated above, it is hopefully a sign of things to come.
